What is a Verb?

  • Verb

Definition: Verbs are a class of words used to show the performance of an action (do, throw, run), existence (be), possession (have), or state (know, love) of a subject. In easy words: a verb shows what something or someone does.
For example:
·         Paul rides a bicycle.
·         We buy some books to learn English verbs.
The verb tense shows the time of the action or state. Aspect shows whether the action or state is completed or not. Voice is used to show relationships between the action and the people affected by it. Mood shows the attitude of the speaker about the verb, whether it is a declaration or an order. Verbs can be affected by person and number to show agreement with the subject.
  • Auxiliary verb
Definition: Auxiliary verbs are used together with a main verb to give grammatical information and therefore add extra meaning to a sentence, which is not given by the main verb.

Be, Do and Have are auxiliary verbs, they are irregular verbs and can be used as main verbs.

Modal verbs are also auxiliary verbs, but will be treated separately, these are can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would.

  • Modal verb
Definition: Modal verbs are also called helping verbs, they are not complete verbs, and they can only be used with a verb.
Some basic characteristics of modals
a) Modals are always followed by the base form of the verb, e.g.:
She can speak German.
I might play tennis tomorrow.
b) Modals never have –ing or –ed forms, and do not take –s in the third person singular present.
Louise can read very well now.
Louise couldn’t read when she was three.
c) Negatives are formed by putting not immediately after the modal, except in the case of ought to, where the negative form is ought not to (which is sometimes abbreviated to oughtn’t to). The negative of can is often written as one word cannot. Shall not and will not are usually abbreviated to shan’t and won’t respectively. Could not and would not usually appear as couldn’t and wouldn’t, e.g.:
I might not play tennis tomorrow.
You ought not to tell her.
She can’t come.
We won’t be ready until five.
d) Modals do not use do and did to form questions. Questions are formed by placing the modal before the subject. In the case of ought to, ought is placed before the subject and to after it, e.g.:
Can she speak Spanish?
Ought you to tell her?
Wouldn’t he help you?
When will and would are used after a pronoun, they are often shortened to the contracted forms ’ll and ’d and joined to the pronoun, e.g.:
I’ll help, if you want.
I’m sure she’ll agree.

Reading Comprehension Exercise

Read through the text and choose ONE answer for each question.
Pet Doctor

There is an old saying in the theatre world "Never work with children or animals". It is a pity that Herman Gross has never heard this piece of advice, or if he has, that he didn't pay attention to it. It is not so much that Pet Doctor is a bad film; although I can't really find many reasons for saying it's a good one. It's more that it makes me angry. Gross is a good actor. His appearance on the New York stage last winter in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet showed that he really can act. So what's he doing in this nonsense?
It's a story about a small town doctor who finds he is making more money by looking after the local children's pets than he is by looking after humans. Then he gets into trouble with the police, because he doesn't have the right sort of licence to do this and, surprise, surprise, the children and their pets find a way to solve his problems. I won't say how, as it is the only part of the film that is even slightly original or amusing. If you have to see it, you would be annoyed with me for telling you. But my advice is, when it comes to a cinema near you stay in and shampoo the cat.

Questions
I.- Read the questions then choose the correct answer.

1. What is the writer trying to do in the text?
a. Compare Herman Gross with another actor.
b. Give his or her opinion about using animals in films.
c. Give his or her opinion about Pet Doctor.
2. The text gives the reader...
a. information about a new film.
b. ideas about how animals should be cared for.
c. news about the lives of film stars.
3. The writer thinks that Pet Doctor is ...
a. amusing.
b. original.
c. not worth seeing.
4. Why did the writer mention Romeo and Juliet?
a. It's an example of a really good play.
b. Gross proved he's a good actor in it.
c. The central characters are very young.
5. Which one of these TV guides is describing Pet Doctor?
a. A doctor is loved by the children whose pets he cures. But everything goes wrong and he is sent to prison.
b. A doctor finds he can cure local animals, and then discovers this isn't allowed. But it all finishes happily.
c. A doctor prefers animals to humans and stops looking after his patients. People are dying, the animals are cured, then the police arrive . . .

II.- Read the text again and underline the action verbs, draw a circle around the auxiliary verbs and draw a rectangle around the modal verbs.
